On 23 February 2012, Sohar Aluminium held its annual Fun Run at its premises. The Fun Run which promotes the message of healthy lifestyle and staying fit saw close to 200 athletes which included employees of Sohar Aluminium and their families as well as athletes from Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic) and Oman Aluminium Rolling Company (OARC).

The event had two categories: running and walking. Runners covered a distance of 8 Kilometres while walkers walked 4 Kilometres. The Fun Run this year coincided with the inauguration of the newly developed orchard within the aluminium smelter.

Welcoming the athletes on the occasion, Isabelle Brassard, General Manager Services remarked “The fact that a beautiful orchard is thriving right next to the smelter is proof that we use the most environmentally friendly technology to produce aluminium. We at Sohar Aluminium are committed to preserving our environment while at the same time giving utmost priority to the health and safety of our community. This year’s Fun Run is a celebration of that commitment.” The orchard also attracts a number of birds and has successfully combined the elements of Mother Nature in the backdrop of a highly advanced and efficient smelter.

The route took the runners and walkers around one side of the smelter and incorporated the orchard. The event saw healthy competition with good camaraderie amongst all the athletes and the winners in the various categories walked away with exciting prizes. The Fun Run has firmly established itself as an annual event on Sohar Aluminium’s calendar and in the coming years looks to grow.
