Sohar Aluminium (SA) is a strong believer in caring for the Environment and is always at the forefront in implementing Environmental initiatives. In solidarity with the Earth Hour 2014, SA switched off a vast majority of lights in its premises in Sohar on Saturday, March 29, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

SA has been observing the Earth Hour since 2011 and has been a strong supporter of the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) for this global initiative. Highlighting the importance of supporting the Earth Hour, Ms. Dana Geadah, Communications Manager at Sohar Aluminium noted, “Earth Hour isn’t just about turning lights off for an hour – it’s about people across the world coming together throughout the year to improve the planet. It is a symbolic action and an initiative to encourage individuals and businesses to take accountability for their ecological footprint and reflect on how they can add value and contribute to the solution of environmental challenges.”

By turning off its lights for one hour, this year Sohar Aluminium saved a total of 1,072 kilo Watt Hours (kWh).

Earth Hour is a worldwide grass-roots movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Worldwide, the one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of a now larger movement that focuses on energy conservation and preserving the natural resources and beauty of our world as we know it. SA continues to improve its environmental monitoring program ensuring that results are measured. During January 2014, SA started its first in-house emissions testing of the Casthouse. We are pleased to report that all emissions were well below Omani regulations and some were not even detectable.

Sohar Aluminium has always supported such worthy causes and, in 2014, SA aims to continue to improve its environmental performance with projects that include increasing tree and vegetation planting, targeting further reductions in fluoride emissions and increasing the number of sustainable solutions for waste produced on site.
