Sohar Aluminium (SA) recently participated in the National Bank of Oman’s (NBO) Golf Grand Final Pro-Am Competition that was held at Almouj Golf Course in Muscat. SA's Chief Operations Officer (COO), Chris Murray, SA’s Power Plant Operations Manager, James McDonough and Strategy, Quality and Value Creation Manager, Jason Moodley, teamed up with Golf Professional, Sam Walker, from England to claim the title of the competition coming on top with a close margin of 2 strokes. 22 four-man teams with 3 amateur players joining with a Professional Player competed in the 18 hole competition.

Engineer, Said Al Masoudi, the CEO of Sohar Aluminium commented “We are delighted to support this competition and its final. It is a significant sporting event for the Sultanate of Oman featuring golf’s ‘stars of tomorrow’ and we are proud to be part of it”.

The competition, which was part of the European Challenge Tour events and was sponsored by Sohar Aluminium, saw some of the world’s top 45 ranked players compete for the grand prize as well as 16 places on next season’s elite European Tour.  

“It has been a great pleasure to participate and win this tournament especially that we were competing against some of the top amateur golfers in Oman” said Chris Murry, SA’s COO. He added “We would like to thank our professional player, Sam Walker, for supporting our team and guiding us to win this title. Personally, as a golf enthusiast, I was happy to see a big number of young Omanis participating in the tournament which will contribute to the growth of the sport in Oman and ultimately be of benefit to the future generations”.

Earlier this year, Sohar Aluminium had sponsored a reception in Sohar held by the Oman Golf Committee (OGC). The reception gathered over 25 top executive managers from the Sohar Industrial Area, Freezone and Port to discuss a proposal of establishing a golf course in Sohar. During the reception, the welcome speech was given by the CEO of Sohar Aluminium, Engineer Said Al Masoudi highlighting the long-term benefits and boundless opportunities of having such facility in the area.

Sohar Aluminium was formed in September 2004 to undertake a landmark Greenfield aluminium smelter project in the Sultanate of Oman. It is jointly owned by Oman Oil Company, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC - TAQA and Rio Tinto.
