Over the course of two months and 38 exciting matches, Sohar Aluminium’s (SA) second Football Tournament came to an end this May. The tournament saw more than 300 employees and contractors attending the different matches and cheer the 156 players while they competed to claim the title. The Anode Plant Team, the defending champions of the first tournament, claimed the title after a competitive final match that ended with a score of 1-0 against the Human Resources Development Team. The Central Maintenance Team finished in 3rd place. SA’s Human Resources and Corporate Affairs General Manager, Ahmed Al Kharousi and Services and Maintenance General Manager, Dinesh Sangar, presided over the final match and the closing ceremony and crowned the top three teams.
The tournament that witnessed a high level of team spirit and camaraderie by the players saw twelve teams participating which were divided into two groups. It was open for SA’s employees and contractors and aimed at engaging the employees and contractors in team-building activities as well as motivating them to participate in sports and health-oriented events. It also helped in promoting the adoption of healthy and active lifestyle among the participants. The tournament saw a very good attendance by employees who came to cheer for their colleagues.
Sohar Aluminium firmly believes that the health and safety of its people are its number one priority and thus has a number of events and initiatives planned throughout the year focusing on its employees, their families and the wider community. The annual award-winning Heat Stress Campaign and the community engagement event “Because We Care” are two examples of such initiatives.
Sohar Aluminium was formed in September 2004 to undertake a landmark Greenfield aluminium smelter project in the Sultanate of Oman. It is jointly owned by Oman Oil Company, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC - TAQA and Rio Tinto.
